What do AVAP members do?
Members of the AmeriCorps Victim Assistance Program are placed throughout New Hampshire with crisis centers, police departments, prosecutor offices, the New Hampshire Department of Corrections, child advocacy centers, and college and university campuses to offer support and information to victims of domestic and sexual violence and stalking.
Members placed with crisis centers offer assistance and support to victims seeking temporary and permanent restraining orders in courts throughout New Hampshire. Crisis center advocates also provide confidential support to victims of sexual assault at the Superior Court level. When not assisting survivors in court, members may be answering crisis lines or working one on one with survivors at the Crisis Center.
Members placed with police/prosecutor and Corrections offices serve as liaisons between the victims and those agencies. Members assist by informing victims of upcoming trial dates, plea discussions, restitution issues, and the availability of community resources.
Members placed at child advocacy centers work with the non-offending parents of abused children, the local police deaprtments, prosecutors offices and crisis centers. Members set up forensic interviews, boserve interviews and have follow up contact with parents.
College and University members provide outreach and education to the college campus. Members also participate in the distribution of brochures, posters and other information and work with college and university staff, faculty, and students on prevention strategies (policies, procedures, etc.)
College and university members assist with major educational events (Take Back the Night, Clothesline Project, etc.)
